Tomorrow I'll mostly be fitting a new ECU....into my brothers Caterham as he managed to bugger his old one by jet washing the engine bay last autumn then putting the car away for the winter not knowing water had got into the electronics No

Can't remember the make of the old and new race ECU but its a fancy bit of kit in terms of what information is gives, what you can fettle (or mess up) and I'm sure it does logging.

Anyway, worth taking pics or is a car no place for a bike forum?

Nah, not motec although I've heard of them.

Its a DTA ECU which is a company that iirc used to be based on Bradford but moved over to Manchester a little while back.

http://www.dtafast.co.uk/

He used to have one of their older models but the replacement is one of the newer S models

Here's a link to some screenshots although I think most of these are from the DTAWin software while i think the newer model has newer software to play around with - fingers crossed it's easier to work out what to do than this although I suspect DTA have pre-programmed it with base settings for my brothers engine which is a k-series (1.7L iirc) engine making about 170bhp

http://www.dtafast.co.uk/screenshots.htm

http://www.dtafast.co.uk/screenshots/Extensive%20Diagnostics.PNG

[edit] just remembered I have a video of it in action at a trackday on Elvington Airfield a few years back. Uploading to youtube now Grin

Might as well run down what I can remember about it cos unlike myself who likes to spend a few quid (not too much Wink ) on nice bits for my bikes, his 2004 R1 is fairly standard baring gear and shift indicators. Conversly, his Caterham gets most of the attention with regards to carbon fibre parts and some other stuff. I forget most of what he's done to it as it was fairly well already sorted when he bought it about 5-6 years ago.

Its got a 1.7 K-series engine and an exhaust system that barely/doesn't quite pass 105db noise checks although the few track days he's done in it, they were quite slack on being exactly 105db or less Tongue

Think it makes about 170bhp which doesn't sound much, but its certainly enough for me to spin it on my first go, at the first (coned) corner at Elvington when he handed driving it over to me for my first time Blush That said, I learnt a lot from that initial spin and treated the pedal with more caution afterwards as I'd never realyl driven a car before that could go out of shape at the rear end so quickly from just a small stab of the go faster pedal.

I consider myself quite good at cars in terms of happy to let the rear on my 'normal' car step out on roundabouts (when its quiet and have even won a few bottles of pomanage at eudurance karting Laugh

Other than that, all I can remember other than it being a nice car, is its blue but like my old Passat and matched his other car which was an 2002 TT, but now is more practical 2009 TTS with those paddle shift things and i think around 240 or 270bhp think

We didn't manage to complete it today partly as we started late and partly as its a bit of a long process marking up the existing connectors some of which [sensor wise] we think might not have been connected correctly but we'll see in due course. I had to keep reassuring my brother that so long as we get the 12v fused supply into the ECU correct, then connect up the main wires for injectors and ignition we can get it started then just work out the sensors afterwards as one of these needs 12v + its outputs, maybe three of them need 5v (supplied by ecu) and others just need the sensor ground and their output wires connecting in. Simple if taken one step at a time (I think Confused )

New S40Pro ECU
DTA have preloaded it with a map from the same model Caterham (same engine) with similar tune to my brothers that apparently makes 210bhp. We're sceptical my brothers current 170bhp can be increased to 210 by a map and ingition tweaks alone but worth seeing what it does although we're going to save this new map then load up my brothers old map for initial starting and testing.

Sorry mate, am interested, watched the video and everything. Looking at that ECU wiring diagram though and what you were saying about it and some od the sensors not being connected properly ... I'm not sure I'd have the guts to attempt it No

The problem is all the fellas thought the ECU could be fitted to their bikes but lost interest the second they saw that screenshot of the engine diagnostic... way too much information to handle for us! Laugh

Caterhams have always floated my boat, I think they look superb but always feel they're wasted on the road. Any traffic & they're just another car in a queue whereas the bike is 'progressing'.
Nice to own if you can afford it though.

Briefly looked into buying one in 1999 before I decided to get the RRX.

Got in touch with Caterham, Westfield & Tiger. Eventually decided the bike was more practical for weekend thrills.

Interesting photos, tasty car. Thumbs Up

ok, so some of you are reading smile

I guess its just nice [as with all threads] that when someone takes a bit of time to make a post (especially with pics Grin ) that there's a sign that its being read otherwise its a waste of time even if that is just a smile or Thumbs Up or even a Thumb Down

/back on topic

Went down again on Monday evening and finished off a few things

a) fitted a new waterproof screw and locknut type grommet for the wires that go through the alloy bulkhead into the passneger side fusebox as the wires had been protected from rubbing on the alloy by little more than what seemed like some sort of bitumen substance Confused
b) Crimped and lightly soldered each of the approx 20 wires to pins then inserted (with great difficultly) into the ECU's new connector.
c) Most of the sensors or componants such as Crank VR, Water, Air, Lambada etc.. required a common sensor ground, some things needed 12v from fusebox (eg the solid state ingition/distrubter thing and injectors) or 5volt from the ECU so we spliced them together (and soldered) as there's on space on the ecu's pins to solder one wire in.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, connector done, hooked up, ignition on and immediatly we heard a good sign, the fuel pump primed which it wouldn't do with the old water damaged ECU.

Unfortunatly, after uploading my brothers original map to the ECU with a laptop the DTASWin software displayed the sensor readouts fine on the virtual dashboard screen (eg throttle potentiometer worked as did battery voltage and water temp) but it wouldn't start Wall For some reason it showed FAILED against the virtual Fuel pump gauge but we think thats a red herring we're not sure that the fuel pump has ever been wired into the display its status, only to draw power on command.

Its was getting on for 10pm at this point with light fading so we only got as far as pulling a couple of plugs and testing for sparks on both the Cylinder 1&4 and 2&3 but there were none. I suggested pulling two plugs from each of the two separate firing banks as 1&4 and 2&3 fire at the same time and each uses a separate wire/signal from the ECU so this eliminated one of the connector not making proper contact which would have been an easy fix but its not that and its not for lack of 12V to the distributer either so we're a bit stuck atm although suspect theres a reasonable explanation with probably the best bet calling DTA to seek advice on what to check.

Will keep you posted if/when we fix it and maybe if that comes soon, I might video it coughing and spluttering to life RollEyes

I think you're very brave TBH. One wrong +ve 12v into that ECU and it's history isn't it?

I'd deffo be on the phone to the makers before I went any further Thumbs Up

Two quick questions.
1)how is the ECU protected from potential electrical damage? OE Honda usually have a 30A fuse wired in directly. A bit crude but very effective.
2)I don't understand why they don't waterproof these ECU. I mean... even Ducati does it! Laugh
