hello all, new member from leicester with silver SP1. had it for five years now and still love it as much as the first day! put high comp pistons in this year but not running at moment due to valve timing issue, il leave this to the pro.done most of the other RC mods but to be truthfull none of them make that much difference so hoping the pistons will. enjoy the sun everyone.index.php/fa/16178/0/

Hi Tev, nice bike Thumbs Up

I had one, cracking bikes and can well understand you've kept hold of it 5 years as mine lasted 2.5 which is my record upto now with a bike Thumbs Up

With the hi-comp pistons, is there much gain to be expected as while some think the bikes now lacking in power compared to more modern bikes incl newer twins, I found it spot on with about 130bhp (not slow, but not overly manic) like I do with my current 929 with a similar power output albeit delivered in a totally different way?

Hi there Kermit, stock bike runs about 118 to 120 BHP, i changed the airbox, removed flapper valve and machined out ram air, and removed anti emission valve winter before last and got it to 126 BHP. did the pistons this winter and should have had the heads gas flowed but this didnt happen and would have made significant gains with little detriment to the reliability. but the higher compression should give tourque and power gains through the range and as i have put on over two stone since getting the bike every bit is welcome. suspension will be my next project. the photo is an old one from last winter, got a sexy carbon screen and headlight covers now, watsen design front indicators and loads of carbon bits as well. will post more pics when its back together.

Just got back on the road after 9 months rebuild and missing the best biking spring ever known! needs some TLC with the new high comp pistons but feels good.run in a little then dyno in a week or so.runs at 84c but heats up real quick now in traffic. i had reversed the cooling fan direction as iv fitted air scoops around the rads but the fan seems ineffective like this so il swap it back to try. has anyone tried this with any success? got a price from k tech to rework the forks though the ohlins on ebay look good at present, and the maxton shock too! time to swat some flies.index.php/fa/16309/0/

Someone on here definitely had overheating / cooling problems with an SP a while back and tried all sorts of things to put it right. It will be inthe archives somewhere. Try a search. IIRC it was Kagugo but I could be wrong about that Confused

thanks for that il have a look. def have to swap fan rotation back first to see if that helps. had read the new pistons would cause more heat so did the fan mod to aid air flow from the front and out through the side but as with most fans they push air better one way than the other.

Hi Teve,

Before you change back is it worth seeing if the fan impeller can be turned through 180 degrees, this should change from suck to blow as youve already sorted the rotation.

Hi SPal, was looking at that on a parts fiche/pdf that iv got. seems the impeller will detach from the fan motor and hopefully fit the other way round. il give it a try and post findings thanks.

Steve,

No problem mate.

Only reason I suggested it was I'm doing up my blade at present and can confirm that on mine the impeller is held onto the motor shaft by a single m6 nut, motor shaft is round with two flats machined on it to give drive to impellr so can't see why it shouldn't be turned round.

If the name things pissing you off why not PM Kermit and see if he can "adjust" for you.

swapped impeller as suggested but had to space the motor support brkts off the rad a little.rain stopped play but certainly pushes more air through rad when i shorted out the temp switch. Grin Thumbs Up

Cool, see ur still Teve, u r leaving as?

What temp does your bike reach?

mine normally sits around the 96 mark.

Dont know if its worth trying to get impeller off blade etc as they were designed to push air, I believe I read in one of the posts that the SP's are one of very few bikes which pull air through the rad.

Did you get any pictures of the engine work u had done?

yep leaving it as Teve easier to sign autographs Grin got a couple of shots of the cylinder heads when my mate had cleaned them up and rebuilt. il try to dig them off my phone. running temp was not an issue at about 85c helped by the Durbhan air scoops and engine ice coolant,it was the standing temp and that when the fan cut in at 100c it used to fall but now carried on rising!that was with just reversing the motor direction! not been out since turning round the impeller but tests were promising, and the forks are coming off now for the rework so itl be a couple of weeks. il get stuck in traffic at the earliest oppertunity to test it properly.

That's a lovely looking bike mate, the fact that you've had it for 5 years is helping to influence my decision to buy one.

Are these bikes renowned for getting "warm" then? Or is it just a bi- product of tuning and fettling?

Hi Gazk,

Never had overheating probs with my SP1 sits at about 96 on the gauge.

Apart from when I took rad hoses off and didn't bleed system properly, went up to 126 and checked a load of coolant out.

Once bled up correctly, it returned to its pre SPal'd state

know the feeling Al, made my fair share of minor cockups but then thats how you learn. most of the mods are reversable and its only money!!! if your thinking of getting one Gazk i would leave the engine unmoded and stock air box with stock filters, just change the zorst and have a power commander especially for the SP1. i would then focus my attention on forks and shock where the money is best spent. cosmetics as you like them, plenty of cheap carbon out there. there are faster bikes and better handling bikes but there always will be so what do you get next thats why i v kept it for so long. its more than enough for me.
