Hi all, does anyone know an alternative method of holding the fork damper during disassembly of the forks on an SP1, Honda want £60 + Vat + postage for the special tool, which seems a bit steep.

Hi Dan,

If your trying to get the top adjuster seperated from the tube, I just left mine bolted into the yoke and undid about half way prior to dropping out.

Once undone this far the amount of pressure required to move the adjuster is far less and you can hold the tube in a rag and still turn adjuster till its fully out.

If its not this adjuster, what are you trying to seperate.

He's trying to seperate the cartridge from the fork tube, it is something that could be mde up, but you'd have to know the knockout/cutout section measurements and tube diameter to do it, so Ideally you'd need a pattern/proper one to copy it.

As per PM dan, I haven't found anything cheaper in this country, one for my zook is about £60 delivered. smile

as above there not cheap tools Sad

its sometimes cheaper or cost effective to get it done by a garage as the part cost with the usd's can get silly and damage is best avoided Thumb Down

As quazi says above, I'm one of those sad cases! :-) to be honest I've got another set of RVF400 forks to service, so it'll be worthwhile me buying the tools.

I've just ordered the following from the states:
http://pitposse.com/podarodfoto.html
and a fork oil level tool they do. I might get stung for import duty yet but with postage, both those came to £52, which isn't too bad.

Hi All,

This stuff looks good, useful to know where to get specialist tools from.

Is there a way of judging oil level without the tube type, got the blade to do which tanks 509cc per leg.

Honda man said just buy two 500cc tubs as not all oil comes out but I've fully stripped and cleaned all of the internal components in these legs and theyve been off bike for over a week so would doubt if theyve got 10cc left in each leg.

How CRITICAL is it to get it spot on?

Very,
the amount isn't as critical as the level is in each leg. Do you have any measurements ie 13.5 cm from the top?
If you do, all you have to do is top them up to the same measurement and all you need is a ruler.
It doesn't matter what your starting point is as long as the finishing level is the same smile

Thanks Pete

Manual says

"oil level is 110mm, from the top of the tube with the fork spring removed and the leg fully compressed"

so if i make up a "dipstick" 110mm long I can whack 500cc in each leg and then just keep adding it a bit at a time until dipstick gets wet, then repeat on other leg.

Thanks

Excellent! smile
I couldn't remember the measurement off the top of my head.
Once you've got a bit in each one, half full or more, give the fork leg a bit of a pump just in case there are any air bubbles in there. Between that and your dip stick it will ensure you end up with equal amounts in both legs.
Have Fun!
