Hi All,

Wish I could give you all some Doohan esq story about my disfigurement at assen, but simple truth: At 44, my doc says I've got arthritis in right hip.

I've been looking half heartedly at thumb operated rear brake setups.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/brembo-rear-thumb-brake-thumbbrake-gsx r-zx-cbr-race-r1-/320561930525?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Motorc ycle_Parts&hash=item4aa2fae11d

and would value your opinions on them,

I must say I've been riding cbr6, SP1 & cbr9, for last year or so, without having touched rear brake.

I normally only ride in dry and wonder if the whole conversion thing is a "waste of time and money".

Have any of you had experience of these conversions or know of anything on the market at a more attractive price.

Thanks

Is the pain that severe that you would need to fit one?

You don't use the rear brake? lol.. I would have a humungous crash every time I went out if I didn't use the rear break lol.

But if the pain is bad enough that you can't use the rear brake then surely this kind of thing would be the answer, bit expensive, but if it means you can keep riding then I guess it's the right thing to do.

Hi Gazk,

nah its not pain, to be comfortable I need to ride with toes on peg, which means that if I want to use rear brake I have to move foot back to rest on peg.

After about 30 or so mins I can't feel right leg and so moving foot becomes rather difficult.

Thats why most of my riding is done on twisty A roads, so I can keep moving on the bike and so the leg dosn't go "to sleep".

I must say I use the gearbox a lot to brake and so havn't had any moments not using rear brake.

Which I find suprising as I ride very weight forward and really load the front wheel.

Thing going through my mind is: if I've worked out a riding style that does away with rear brake use, is it worth getting the conversion done.

"Normally when I stop, the rear wheels in the air so I doubt a brake would benefit much" lol

aside from the bling factor which you pay for, I'm not sure us mortals would really be able to make a thumb brake work better than the normal lever on the road and given you've got a few bikes at your disposal, should you need to stop quickly (in the wet) maybe your quick reflexes in a situation might go for a non existant foot lever.

just my 2p, but the biggest draw back is the cost, they aint cheap

Laugh I have done this once before and wished i was wearing a nappy!

But i can see where you're coming from. Personally i'd struggle to adapt to a thumb operated rear brake. my brain wouldnt be able to cope with it lol.

I guess it depends whether you feel you need to use your rear brake.. I've found mine useful for small things such as .. erm.. stopping Laugh But each to their own, if you're into your stoppies, why bother Wink

Gazk,

The stoppy thing was a joke, and I must say that for the last twenty or so years, even before my leg was fucked I very rarely used much rear brake.

I was just interested in exploring the available options.

But,

As kermit wants to take the piss out of a cripel, I will limit my future posts to those about electric vehicles

( FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE HARD OF HEARING, THAT WAS A SARCASTIC COMMENT).

Laugh I thought you were joking, but I did do a stoppie once by accident and almost needed a change of pants. lol. Silly me, didn't do that again!

I guess you love prius's then given they're very green and eco friendly things RollEyes

Have you spotted anything at a reasonable price cos I've been thinking about how they actually operate the rear brake, is it by wire or hydrolic? think

Hi Kermit,

Nah, it was a dip toe ( no pun intended) into water thread to sound out you guys and I accept that anyone with a leg that worked ok wouldn't need such a contraption but (nearly £300.00) just to use a back brake.

Like F**K,

Keep on riding as I am, and praying alot, should be ok. and if it isn't - hey,

ITs been emotional.

Nope, SPAL and yourself are the same it seems. I use my rear brake more than my front, but balance between the two.

On a side note SPAL, did you watch the IOM TT this year? There was a TT Zero for electric bikes.. just in case you were interested Twisted Evil

must be difficult anyway in high heels, best go for an automatic as well! Laugh maybe you could link the front and back like some of the old hondas did with more to the front both off the front brake lever.

Tha SPs riding position is notoriously uncomfortable especially for the taller person and 30 minutes normally leaves me numb all over (but very happy) the footpeg position wont help you AL have you had a look at the MFW Vario footpegs on the Busters site. it could be simply a case of lowering your pegs. rearsets would only make it worse i think. soz to hear about your affliction fingers crossed it dosnt spread to the "middle leg" Grin

Never use my back brake.

Used to use it all the time 'till I did track days and got some advice from a couple of very fast guys.

Last time the bike went for an MOT the brake light stuck on when the back brake was tested. When I explained that I never used it the tester just gave the switch a shot of WD40 and that was it sorted.
